Search engine success: google love!

Our experimental website CloneYourPet.net just turned 5 months old on July 18th. We're so very proud of this little guy! We have some results that we are excited to share with you. As you may know, the initial purpose of this natural experiment was to determine what kind of boost in rankings one may get in the search engines when the target search phrase is in the domain name itself. What we found is that this definitely gives you an initial boost, but that boost is short-lived.

CloneYourPet.net - A little history
We launched the site on February 18th, submitted to search engines on the 23rd, and appeared in the first page of google's results 13 days later. Unfortunately this triumph was fleeting and we dissapeared after 7 days at the top. Our website resurfaced in google about a month later at position #110. That's a far cry from #8, but at least we were back! Once our site reappeared in google, we began climbing the ranks. A week later, we were up to #98. Twenty days after that, we had climbed to #56. Just one week later, we rocketed to #8 again! That was May 14th, 2009 and we are thrilled to announce that we've been holding steady between #5-7 ever since!

The above example refers to google.com using the search phrase clone your pet. At the time of writing this article, a quick google search reveals that we're currently #5. Here are a few other highlights.

What about building traffic?
In our last article on this project, we mentioned that we were going to shift our focus to building traffic for our pet cloning website. Pet cloning, while very interesting, is not yet a very hot topic. The average monthly search volume for "cloning your pet" is just 91. That means on average, 91 people are searching google for this phrase each month. The interesting news is that in the month of July, cloneyourpet.net received nearly 300 unique visitors. 85% of these visits were referred by search engines.

What's all this mean?
Well, it means that once pet cloning becomes more popular, we can expect to see a DRAMATIC increase in traffic to our website. It means that our methods of obtaining and maintaining first page rank in the search engines are working. It also means that the tools we use to collect data about website traffic and rank are extremely useful and accurate. Finally, it means that we are ready to begin our next SEO experiment, which will be in a more competetive niche.
